Weathering Is the Biggest Enemy
A pet tombstone outdoors must endure decades. Sun, rain, ice, snow, and sand all slowly wear down stone. Engraving becomes shallow. Moss grows on surfaces. Edges flake off. Understanding weather resistance helps you choose the longest-lasting stone.
Natural Weather Resistance of Stones
Granite: Most weather-resistant. Porosity <0.5%, absorbs almost no water. Freeze-thaw cycles cause no damage. UV doesn’t fade color. A quality granite tombstone can last over a hundred years, even centuries.
Slate: Medium resistance. Higher porosity, absorbs water. Freeze-thaw may cause delamination. In dry climates, can last 50+ years. In wet climates, less.
Marble: Poor resistance. Main component calcium carbonate reacts with acid rain, slowly dissolving the surface. Outdoor marble tombstones have blurry engraving after 50 years.
Sandstone: Poorest resistance. High water absorption. Freeze-thaw causes cracking and flaking. Outdoor lifespan typically 10-30 years.
Conclusion: If you want a stone that lasts decades, choose granite.

Engraving Depth Determines Longevity
Shallow engraving will be worn smooth by weathering after a few decades. Industry standards:
- Sandblasting: Depth 1-3 mm. Most durable. Wide, deep grooves remain visible even after several mm of surface weathering.
- Laser engraving: Depth 0.2-0.5 mm. Only for photos. Not recommended for text because depth is too shallow.
Recommendation: For text, choose sandblasting. For photos, accept laser‘s shallow depth but choose high-contrast stone (black granite).
Sealers: An Extra Protective Layer
Sealer is a liquid applied to the stone surface, forming a waterproof layer after drying. It doesn’t prevent mechanical wear, but reduces moisture penetration, moss growth, and freeze-thaw damage.
Stones that benefit from sealer: Slate, sandstone (high absorption). Not needed: Granite (already dense).
Sealer types:
- Silane/siloxane: Penetrating, doesn‘t change appearance. Lasts 5-10 years.
- Acrylic: Film-forming, glossy. Lasts 3-5 years, may change stone color.
- Fluorocarbon: Most durable, lasts 10-15 years, most expensive.
Application frequency: Slate and sandstone every 2-3 years.
UV Resistance
UV doesn’t damage the stone itself, but it degrades paint fill.
- Epoxy fill: UV-resistant 15-20 years.
- Acrylic fill: UV-resistant 3-5 years.
- No fill: Never fades (nothing to fade).
Recommendation: If you don‘t want fading, choose no fill, or choose high-contrast stone (black granite with white engraving is readable even without fill).

Moss and Biological Growth Resistance
Moss, lichen, and algae grow on damp stone surfaces. Their root-like structures penetrate pores, causing surface flaking.
Prevention:
- Choose smooth granite (moss struggles to attach)
- Clean regularly (soft brush + water)
- Apply sealer (reduces moisture)
Removal: Scrape gently with plastic scraper, brush clean. No metal tools or bleach.
