Memorials Are Not Just for Humans
In Chinese tradition, Qingming and the Hungry Ghost Festival are days to honor ancestors. As pets become more important family members, more people are using these days to remember their beloved pets. A pet tombstone provides a physical place for these rituals.
Qingming Festival (Tomb-Sweeping Day)
Qingming is usually on April 4th or 5th. It’s a day to clean graves, add soil, and offer flowers.
Steps:
- Clean the stone: Wipe with a soft cloth to remove dust and leaves.
- Offer flowers: Choose flowers your pet liked, or lilies, chrysanthemums, or daisies.
- Place offerings: A small bowl of pet food, water, or treats. (Remove offerings afterward.)
- Bow or sit in silence: Stand before the stone and remember, or speak aloud.
Important: Don‘t burn paper money at the grave unless the cemetery allows it. Fire risk and environmental concerns are the main reasons.
Hungry Ghost Festival
The Hungry Ghost Festival is on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month (usually August). Traditionally, it’s when the gates of the underworld open, and people burn paper money and release river lanterns.
Pet-friendly ways:
- Place an electric candle by the stone (safe)
- Fold a paper lotus or boat (symbolizes sending off)
- Write a letter, read it by the stone, then bury it or burn it (if allowed)

Daily Visits
You don’t have to wait for festivals. Daily visits are a way to maintain connection.
Daily: Glance at the stone as you pass. Say a word: “Good morning, Max.”
Weekly: Spend 5 minutes cleaning the stone. Replace the flower.
Monthly: Sit by the stone for 10 minutes. Recall one story.
Anniversary of death: Do something special. Release a balloon. Plant a new flower.
Seasonal Rituals
Spring: Plant flowers around the stone. Clear away dead branches from winter.
Summer: Place a bowl of water by the stone (for wildlife). Or a small fountain.
Fall: Gather fallen leaves and place them on the stone as a temporary decoration.
Winter: Clear snow off the stone. Don’t use ice melt salt.
Involving Family
With children: Let them draw pictures to place under the stone. Let them tell a funny story about the pet.
With elderly family members: Respect their ways. They may want to burn incense or place food offerings. As long as it follows cemetery rules, follow their traditions.
The Tombstone at the Center of Rituals
The tombstone is the heart of memorial rituals. Without it, rituals have no place. A pet tombstone engraved with your pet‘s name and dates gives meaning to every festival. You can place a small stone lantern beside it or plant a low evergreen.
