Why Integrated Design
Traditional approach: urn in the home or buried in the garden, tombstone placed above. Two problems: the urn and stone are separate. If you move, you have to handle each separately. Integrated design builds the urn into the stone itself.
Three Integration Methods
Method 1: Base compartment
The stone has a thick base. A cavity is carved inside the base for an ash bag or small urn. The cavity is sealed with a stone or metal plate. The main stone (with engraving) sits on top.
Pros: Ashes are completely encased in stone, very secure. No extra urn needed. The stone itself is the urn.
Cons: Base must be thick (at least 3-4 inches). Adds weight.
Best for: Home gardens. Owners who don‘t want ashes and stone separate.

Method 2: Back slot
A slot is carved into the back of an upright stone. Ash bag goes in, then sealed with a stone plate. Front engraving unaffected.
Pros: From the front, you can’t tell the stone holds ashes. Traditional look preserved.
Cons: Limited ash capacity. Back plate may loosen.
Best for: Small pets (small ash volume).
Method 3: Stone as urn
The stone itself is a hollow container. A lid on top opens to reveal interior space. Ashes go inside. The whole stone is one large urn.
Pros: Simplest design – just one object. Can be indoor or outdoor.
Cons: Hollow structure weaker, not for large stones. Seal less reliable than solid stone.
Best for: Small pets. Indoor memorial corners.
Sealing Technology for Integrated Stones
Ashes need permanent sealing. Moisture causes clumping or mold.
Sealing methods:
- Epoxy adhesive: Most durable. Seals gaps between stone plates.
- Silicone gasket: For removable lids. Needs periodic checks.
- Cement mortar: Traditional, but prone to cracking.
Note: If you may want to retrieve ashes later (e.g., moving), don‘t use permanent seal. Use removable lid with silicone gasket.
Material Choices
Granite: Best. Strong enough to hollow out. Weather-resistant, good seal.
Slate: Barely usable. Needs extra reinforcement.
Marble: Not recommended. Weak structure, prone to cracking.
Price Difference
- Base compartment: +$50-150
- Back slot: +$30-80
- Hollow stone: +$100-200 (depending on size)
