Five Stages of Custom Tombstone Production
Customizing a pet tombstone is not simply “picking a style.” It is a complete design process, from initial idea to final product, typically taking 2 to 6 weeks. Understanding this process helps you make the right decisions at each stage.
Here are the five stages.
Stage 1: Needs Discussion (1-3 days)
You contact the artisan or online platform and explain your needs. Provide:
- Pet’s species, name, birth and death years (death year can be left blank)
- Text you want engraved (eulogy, poem)
- Placement location (garden, cemetery, indoors)
- Budget range
The artisan will ask about your preferences for material, size, and shape.
Stage 2: Design Proof Creation (2-5 days)
The artisan creates a digital design proof based on your needs. The proof typically includes:
- Shape and size diagram of the tombstone
- Simulated stone color
- Layout of engraving content (font, size, position)
- Layout of symbols or photos
You receive a PDF or image of the design proof. This step is critical. Double‑check for spelling errors. One wrong letter will be on the stone forever.
Stage 3: Design Proof Approval and Revision (1-3 days)
If you are satisfied with the design proof, approve it. If changes are needed, tell the artisan exactly what to change. Common revisions include:
- Changing font
- Correcting engraving text
- Moving symbol position
- Changing stone color
Most artisans offer 1-2 free revisions. Additional revisions may cost extra.
Stage 4: Production (2-5 weeks)
After approval, the artisan begins production. The process includes:
- Cutting the stone to size
- Surface finishing (polished or natural)
- Engraving text and symbols (sandblasting or laser)
- Filling engraved letters with color (white, gold, black, etc.)
- Cleaning and packing

Be patient during this stage. Complex designs (laser photos, custom shapes) take longer.
Stage 5: Delivery and Placement (1-3 days)
When the tombstone arrives, check the following:
- Any chips or cracks from shipping
- Engraving matches the design proof
- Color fill is even
If everything is correct, place it in the predetermined spot. For outdoor placement, ensure the ground is level and stable. For flat markers, you can set them directly on soil. For upright stones, you may need to secure the base with cement.
Common Questions
Q: How many revisions are allowed? Usually 1-2 free. Review carefully before sending the proof.
Q: Can I cancel after production starts? Once stone cutting begins, cancellations are usually not accepted. Canceling before proof approval may incur only a design fee.
Q: The stone color looks different from the proof? Stone is a natural material. The same named color may vary slightly between batches. This is normal.
